Hi everyone!
I am a second grade Gen. Ed. teacher at
Laurel Hill Elementary in Hanover Park.
I have been working at this at-risk school for seven years. I love it here! The staff works closely together to enable everyone to succeed,
Education is a second career for me. I chose to
pursue education full-time after raising two
children in whose classrooms I volunteered for
11 years.
I strive to be the change I want to see.
I recently completed the requirements for Learning Behavioral Specialist. I then moved on attaining a Gifted Certification. I see the need to address both ends of the emotional spectrum equally. Using yoga and mindfulness enables all children to learn.
I now am pursuing more information about Technology in the classroom. We are 1:1 with Chrome streams, and 2:1 with iPads. I have a SMART Board too! I struggle getting it all in efficiently.

Joan,
ReplyDeleteYou and I have a similar progression. I started teaching middle and high school Social Studies and then went on to earn my LBSI endorsement, gifted endorsement, and am currently working toward my Technology Specialist endorsement. I love your very positive introduction expressing many of the ideas that I don't take the time to write down about education. Seeing the integration of yoga and mindfulness into the classroom is so powerful since students can learn skills that will help them throughout their lifetime. I look forward to working with you throughout this course.
Thank you for your comments Kathleen. My administrator has been very supportive with the yoga. I spent the summer creating more student activities to bring the class forward with controlled breathing. I am eager to implement it all this year to help students with anxiety.
DeleteJoan,
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for caring for your students! My oldest had high anxiety to the point that we changed schools after two years of the school administrators not doing anything productive or effective to help support my son. Within a few days of being at his new school, my son was flourishing and his love of learning returned.
Thank you so much for what you do to help support your students. They are blessed to have you as their educator!
Thank you for your kind words. And thank goodness your son found a new nourishing
ReplyDeleteschool!
Joan, I began my teaching career as a classroom teacher then became certified as a school librarian. I also am pursuing courses in technology to help with my teaching and will be starting at a new school that is 1:1 with Ipads. I have found the few technology courses I already completed to be very useful and I am sure you will gain a lot of relevant knowledge throughout this course.
ReplyDeleteJoan,
ReplyDeleteMy mother followed a very similar path as you. While raising my brother and I, she volunteered and was eventually hired as a reading aide at our elementary school. She followed that up with becoming a reading specialist and has been loving it ever since. I used to be in a classroom with a SMART board. I miss it. How have you utilized your SMART board as a behavioral specialist?
Hi Joan, Nice to see you again. I hope your school year has gotten off to a good start. Isn't teaching awesome. I always have people in other fields asking me about teaching. Sounds like you are living their dream as a second career move. I dabbled in some other careers but that was simply to get through college. I am quite happy that I am able to teach.
