Hi everyone!
I am a second grade Gen. Ed. teacher at
Laurel Hill Elementary in Hanover Park.
I have been working at this at-risk school for seven years. I love it here! The staff works closely together to enable everyone to succeed,
Education is a second career for me. I chose to
pursue education full-time after raising two
children in whose classrooms I volunteered for
11 years.
I strive to be the change I want to see.
I recently completed the requirements for Learning Behavioral Specialist. I then moved on attaining a Gifted Certification. I see the need to address both ends of the emotional spectrum equally. Using yoga and mindfulness enables all children to learn.
I now am pursuing more information about Technology in the classroom. We are 1:1 with Chrome streams, and 2:1 with iPads. I have a SMART Board too! I struggle getting it all in efficiently.
With a focus on Google Classroom, I have mastered areas that were unfamiliar to me. I want to dive into assessment to be more through in gleaning student understanding in answering essential questions and wondering more about their world on a deeper level. With all I know and want to tech my students, the lack of Classroom know-how has prevented me from moving forward with my second graders. BRING IT ON!

Hi, Joan,
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing! I appreciate your positivity and collaborative approach to learning. Your students are fortunate to have a teacher who models mindfulness in the classroom. I would love to hear more about how you incorporate that into the day! It sounds like your students have access to many different technologies at school! Can you tell me a bit more about Chrome streams? I am unfamiliar with what those are.
Thanks!
Jessica Brown
Chrome streams are a smaller laptop without a disc drive. We mostly use them for intervention and a substitute for paper text. I want to do more with them to enable students be be more technologically savvy as most have no technology at home and my district does not send technology home.
ReplyDeleteAs for yoga and mindfulness, I taught both directly the first trimester daily after lunch. I used it to calm every one. It really works. Now we use it if we are stressed about a test, or again, after lunch, especially indoor recess. I LOVE mindfulness. When kids are slouched or tapping I simply ask, "Will you sit mindfully please?" and the whole class perks up, sits up straight . . AS ONE! Amazing!! We use stress balls too. An friends have donated to my cause so now we have six!
